A Little Bit of History
Founded in 1947 by the Marquess of Bute, Bute Fabrics has been creating high quality textiles for 70 years. Formed primarily to create employment opportunities for local servicemen returning from World War II, the mill quickly established itself as one of the country’s most iconic textile manufacturers and became the beating heart of the community on the Isle of Bute.
Bute Fabrics use the natural beauty of the island as their main inspiration. Influences on the textures and hues of their textiles come from the heather-covered moorland, rolling green hills, untameable highland forests, and the sweeping beaches and swirling seas all found on the island. Bute may only be situated 33 miles from Glasgow, but when you are on the island it feels wild and remote – the perfect place from which to draw creative vision.
Not only is the utmost care taken at the creative stage, but attention to detail is a focus for Bute Fabrics all the way through the manufacture process. The highly trained staff are all experts in their fields to ensure quality is maintained throughout the production. Bute Fabrics is constantly striving to create the most technically advanced woollen fabrics in the world and are always seeking ways to break boundaries. Even their colour matching process is a complex matter: each of the new textiles is tested under different simulated natural daylight from around the globe to ensure the final product colour is precise, no matter where it travels to.
A Perfect Partnership
This dedication to perfection is something Bute Fabrics prides itself on so it made perfect sense for such an illustrious brand to partner with Lateral City – both focus on providing the highest quality whilst never compromising on beautiful design. Some of the team from Lateral City apartments and Chris Stewart Group got the opportunity to travel to the Isle of Bute and take a look around the Bute Fabrics factory and head office. Not only did they get to view the whole creative process from start to finish, they also got to meet some of the talented craftspeople behind the products, check out some of the newest innovative textiles, and experience the amazing natural beauty of the island itself. Those from the interior design team were able to gather some amazing inspiration from the visit and Lateral City are excited for this relationship with Bute Fabrics to continue – watch this space!
