Edinburgh is not short of places for an after work refreshment or a Saturday night tipple but there are some fresh, new establishments eager to entice you in to try their delicious dishes and creative cocktails this festive season! These new bar & restaurants will be perfect for warming up in, during the coming winter months.
The Refinery, St Andrews Square
Opens 21st November
From Drake & Morgan, comes a Northern arm to their already impressive portfolio of modern eateries in London. The Refinery continues the Drake & Morgan characteristic take on sophisticated industrial décor and gastro-pub food and drink, this time north of the border. St Andrews Square seems the perfect location for this development as they are known for their relaxed but buzzing environment., The Refinery will offer sophisticated pub grub that is uncomplicated but tasty, not to mention a cracking (and comprehensive) brunch menu. It will also be adding to the well developed Edinburgh cocktail scene – where it won’t necessarily add anything mind-blowingly new, the cocktail menu is well rounded with lots of choice. There will also be a lovely selection of alcohol free cocktails and reasonably priced cocktail master classes will be available for those looking for a more hands on approach.
The Empress on Broughton Street
From the people behind the bustling Jeremiah’s taproom, The Empress is the new kid on the Broughton Street block. Along with a varied selection of seasonally inspired cocktails, The Empress also boasts an extensive collection of local Gins (something Edinburgh is quickly becoming known for), and a huge choice of over 100 bottles of beers and ciders from around the world. Craft beer fans won’t be disappointed either, with five fixed beer taps and an additional 8 rotating draughts available. The menu is American-influenced bar food including delicious burgers, flatbreads the size of pizzas, and small plates. The American-style casual dining continues with a shabby chic interior, featuring an eclectic mix of seating including old cinema chairs and bar stools various. Another bar inspired by a character, this time a real historical figure; the first female tattoo artist in the USA, Maud Wagner. Be sure to check her portrait out when you are in the bar.
The Voyage of Buck, William Street
Inspired by a fictional character from the 1900s, William “Buck” Clarence, The Voyage of Buck is an interesting new addition to the West End. A colour palette of blue, mustard and vintage gold, a mixture of eclectic furniture and knick-knacks, artefacts & treasure from Buck’s ‘travels’, create a comfortable but stylish art-deco space. The menu includes small plates, large plates and sweet plates allowing visitors to share or pop in for a quick bite. There will be a weekend brunch menu, perfect for the hungry shopper. The cocktail list is sure to threaten some of Edinburgh’s more established cocktail institutions, with inventive creations, again inspired by Buck’s global wanderings, that will appeal to both concoction connoisseurs and cocktail newbies alike. Travel to far away lands in the comfort of this sophisticated saloon.
