The Old Town in Edinburgh has a superb range of gluten free restaurants and cafes.  You do not need to look far to find some of the best gluten free food in the city.  Here is a round-up of some places to try from local expert blogger, Gluten Free Edinburgh.

A meal from Angels with Bagpipes, Edinburgh

Angels with Bagpipes

Right on the doorstep of Old Town Chambers, Angels with Bagpipes offers a good range of quality food and caters well for gluten free eaters.  Set meals or a la carte, you will enjoy Scottish food at its best, with plenty of gluten free choice.  There is a definite focus on Scottish cooking, with plenty of haggis, fish and meat.

High Tea and the Signet Library, Edinburgh

Colonnades, Signet Library

Just across the road from Old Town Chambers and Angels with Bagpipes you will find Edinburgh’s best fully gluten free afternoon tea.  With bespoke silver, mirrored tables, the finest champagne and superb service, tea in the Colonnades is a true experience.  If you book in advance, they will produce a GF tea pretty much identical to the gluten version.   Milles Feuilles are often featured, as are tarts, scones and cakes.  The team uses Genius bread for the sandwiches and there is a real focus on quality.  There is even a unique Signet Gin to try.  Add this place to your Edinburgh bucket list!

Meal from Wedgwood, Edinburgh

Wedgwood

Further down the Royal Mile is another great restaurant for gluten free food in Edinburgh, Wedgwood.  Here, the menu is always pretty much gluten free, with only tiny tweaks needed to make most options suitable.  On arrival, gluten free diners are brought their own bread and dipping oil, which is delicious and sets the tone for the quality of food on offer.  The set lunch is superb value and the service is great too.   There is a focus on local and seasonal, and you have a glimpse into the kitchen from your table, so you can see Chef Paul Wedgwood at work.

Lunch at Locanda, Edinburgh

La Locanda

Cockburn Street is a steep little cobbled road, with a great little Italian café/restaurant, La Locanda.  On a warm day the tables spill out onto the street and you can enjoy gluten free pasta, bread and cakes here, watching the world go by.  A daily pasta is always available as a gluten free option and they do something wonderful with the bread, toasting it with oil and rosemary – certainly worth a try!  There are good gluten free choices, including cakes, and the service is always friendly.

A fish dish from the Devil's Advocate, Edinburgh

Devil’s Advocate

Just down the close from Old Town Chambers, is a fantastic bar, Devil’s Advocate.  Good food and lots of whisky make this a great destination for lunch or dinner.  The gluten free choices are good too. Dishes can be served with gluten free chips and we would highly recommend trying a super burger with salad and chips, or some fresh Scottish fish.
