Our festive season doesn’t start until we hit the Christmas Markets and take our first sip of mulled wine, consume our weight in bratwurst and crepes and buy an unnecessary number of gifts for loved ones (or ourselves). We love the atmosphere in the markets and get positively giddy with excitement for Santa’s eventual arrival.
Visit The Street of Light
This year The Royal Mile is going to become even more magical!
The Virgin Money Street of Light performance runs from St Andrew’s day to Christmas Eve and will see the iconic Royal Mile lit up like we’ve never seen it before. An architectural installation of 60,000 lights running along the Royal Mile, from the City Chambers to the Tron Kirk will be wowing the people of Edinburgh on a nightly basis. The soundtrack to the event will be provided by the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, who will be signing extracts from The Messiah, accompanied by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Sound good? You’ve not heard the best thing yet… It’s completely free, you just need to register for tickets and wrap up tight.

He’s Behind You!
We love the theatre but haven’t been to the Panto together in Edinburgh, this year we’ll be making sure we catch one of the many performances in Edinburgh. The Kings Theatre is top of our list with an absolute classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarves starring Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott!

There are a few options for those who prefer travelling in circles during Winter in Edinburgh. For beginners, there’s a selection of Helter Skelters, (two on Princes Street and one in St Andrew’s Square), casually glide down and admire the views of the festivities around you.
For intermediate spinners we have the Big Wheel in Princes Street Gardens, a slow and steady ride allowing more time to soak up the atmosphere.
Finally, thrill seekers should advance directly to The Starflyer, at almost 60 metres high and unbearably close to The Scott Monument, this ride is not for the fainthearted. If you can bear to open your eyes you’ll enjoy a truly breathtaking 360-degree view of Edinburgh!
Get Your Skates On
There’s one thing I know I’ll never be able to master, gliding on ice with knives strapped to my feet. Nevertheless, I will try again this year, I’ll no doubt fall flat on my derrière but nothing says Christmas like a numb bum.
Drive-In Christmas Movies
I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to watch too many movies, but each year I test my limits during the festive season. I love nothing more than re-watching classic films and trying to discover new favourites, what better place to do this than a drive-in featuring the world’s biggest LED screen. There’s a great selection of films on offer, including Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, Bad Santa and Love Actually – which will you choose?

Christmas Afternoon Tea
Our favourite afternoon tea in Edinburgh can be found at Colonnades at The Signet Library, this winter will see the launch of an especially festive menu. Christmas cocktails, mulled wine and a ‘build your own hot chocolate’, we can’t wait to check out this stunning venue once it gets the Christmas treatment – it’s going to be stunning!

Join Edinburgh’s Secret Santa Event
This year sees the return of Edinburgh’s city-wide secret Santa campaign. Buy a gift for a perfect stranger and hopefully make some new friends at the meet-up in January. There were 200 participants last year and it’s shaping up to be an even bigger event this December.
